It may be possible to retrain your brain to stop craving junk food, a new study shows. An international team of researchers found that seniors who consumed the most nutritious food had a nearly 25 percent reduction in the risk of mental decline compared those with the least healthy diets, according to the study published Wednesday in the online issue of Neurology. Those consuming the most nutritious diets were 24 percent less likely to have cognitive declines compared to people consuming the least healthy foods. Many loaded teas advertised have at least 160 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to about two cups of coffee (the FDA says 400 milligrams a day is safe for healthy adults, though the organization acknowledges that caffeine affects people differently). Aim for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa to get the maximum benefits for brain health and memory. For example, berries and coffee can be a great breakfast to start your day, fish and broccoli are excellent for lunch, and dark chocolate is a good after-meal dessert.
