The free Brain Health Fair is open to anyone interested in learning how the brain works, particularly for patients, caregivers, and families affected by neurologic disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, headaches, stroke, brain injuries, and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Amanda Smith is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and the director of clinical research at the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute in Tampa, Florida. The computer-based program, designed by a group of university neuroscientists, has transformed recent discoveries in brain research into practical programs that can help improve memory, communication, and thinking skills in mature adults. It is believed to improve memory and attention, though further research is needed to confirm this claim. Science clearly demonstrates that, in situations where toxic stress is likely, intervening as early as possible is critical to achieving the best outcomes. For children experiencing toxic stress, specialized early interventions are needed to target the cause of the stress and protect the child from its consequences. The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Division (CAMHD) provides mental health services free of charge for eligible children and youth in Hawaii who have severe emotional and/or behavioral challenges.
