There are many efforts to build alternatives to centralized Web platforms, and almost all are aligned in their agreement with at least some of the criticisms described above, as well as a general commitment to decentralization as a means to redistribute power from platforms to individuals by allowing them to control how they communicate with others online, how they present themselves (see for e.g. Guy 2017), and to own and control their personal data.2 These projects often refer to the early Web with reverence. These efforts comprise a variety of approaches, some in competition with one another while others are complementary.
